Right after it breaks

What to do in the first hour

Most glass damage starts small and gets worse with heat, cold and bumps. A few minutes of care keeps a repair a repair, and keeps the rain out of a broken door.

  1. Look at it closely

Is it a chip, a crack, or glass broken open? Note the size against a coin or a dollar bill and how close it sits to the edge.

  2. Keep it clean and dry

Put a piece of clear tape over a fresh chip so dirt and water stay out of the break until it is filled.

  3. Take it easy on the glass

Skip the car wash, avoid blasting the defroster on a cold morning and do not slam the doors.

  4. Cover an open window

Tape heavy plastic over a broken door or back glass, and take valuables out of the car.

  5. Get it quoted

Send the quote form with the vehicle and the damage, or call the number on this page.

How it works

From the quote to driving away

The same four steps whether the work is done at the shop or at your car.

  1. Tell us the vehicle

Year, make, model and what is broken. Have the VIN ready: Impex uses it to order the right glass for your exact car.

  2. Quote and a time

Impex quotes the job, works out with you whether it goes through insurance, and books the shop on David Cox Rd or a place where your car will be.

  3. The work

A chip is filled with resin. A replacement means the old glass out, new glass set, and the forward camera calibrated when your car needs it.

  4. Back on the road

A new windshield takes about an hour plus a short curing period. Impex tells you when the car is ready to drive.

Charlotte auto glass

A Charlotte auto glass shop with a real address

Search for Charlotte auto glass and you get a long list of names, call centers and directory pages. Many of them have no place you can drive to. This site belongs to Impex Auto Glass, and Impex has a shop in north Charlotte: 5641 David Cox Rd, Charlotte, NC 28269. It is listed on Impex’s own website and on Google Maps under Impex Auto Glass.

One thing to clear up first. Charlotte Auto Glass is the name of this website, taken from the words people type into Google. There is also an unrelated Charlotte business that trades under a similar name. This site is not that company and is not connected with it. Everything here is Impex Auto Glass: the quote form, the phone line and the people who do the work.

Impex Auto Glass is a North Carolina company headquartered in Greensboro, where its other shop is, at 8748 W Market St. It is part of the Impex group, alongside Impex Auto Sales, and says it serves all of North Carolina, all of South Carolina and parts of Georgia, with mobile service across that area. From the Charlotte shop the same work reaches your driveway, your office garage in Uptown or the lot where your car sits all day.

Repair or replace

Chip, crack or new glass: how the call is made

The first question on any windshield is whether it can be saved. Three things decide it: the size of the damage, how deep it goes and where it sits on the glass. Impex’s own guide is that a repair may be possible when the damage is small, shallow and away from the edges. Damage that is large, deep or runs to the edge usually means a new windshield.

There is also a published standard. ROLAGS, the Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard run by the National Windshield Repair Division, says that stone breaks up to two inches in diameter and single line cracks up to 14 inches are repairable. Those are outer limits, not a promise. Shops also use rules of thumb: Impex speaks of small chips as smaller than a quarter, and a common industry rule of thumb is damage smaller than a dollar bill. Neither is a law.

The technician makes the final call at the car. A chip right in front of the driver may be small enough to fill and still be better replaced, because a repair leaves a faint mark where the stone hit.

After a new windshield

Cameras behind the glass, and why calibration matters

Many cars on Charlotte roads now have a forward camera mounted at the top of the windshield. It runs lane departure warning, collision braking and adaptive cruise control. I-CAR, the collision repair training body, lists removing the windshield as one of the events that may require the camera to be aimed again. When a new windshield goes in, the camera sees the road through new glass and may need to be reset to the car’s specifications.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that forward collision warning with automatic braking cut rear-end crashes in half. That is the system a misaimed camera can confuse. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after a windshield replacement, static or dynamic as the car requires, and says calibration takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours. Static calibration uses targets set in front of the car; dynamic calibration means driving the car at a set speed for a set time or distance.

Radar is different. Forward radar sensors usually sit in or behind the front bumper or grille, not the windshield, so a windshield job does not normally call for radar calibration.

Insurance in North Carolina

How a glass claim usually works

In North Carolina, glass damage normally falls under the comprehensive part of an auto policy. The NC Department of Insurance lists breakage of glass among comprehensive losses, and says the coverage pays the cost of repair less any deductible. North Carolina has no law that sets the glass deductible to zero, though some policies include full glass coverage. Check yours.

Two more rules matter. Under G.S. 58-3-180 the claimant chooses who repairs the vehicle, and the insurer pays the same amount whichever shop you pick. And because a rock chip is not an at-fault accident, a comprehensive glass claim does not add Safe Driver Incentive Plan points, though insurers may look at how often you claim. The glass insurance claims guide goes through it step by step.

Bring to the shop

  • The vehicle’s VIN, from the base of the windshield or the door frame
  • Your insurer’s name and policy or claim number
  • A photo of the damage, if you sent the form
  • Anything you need out of the car before the glass comes out

Questions

Auto glass questions from Charlotte drivers

Short answers. Each service page has more.

Uptown Charlotte towers above the arena
Is this the business called Charlotte Auto Glass?

No. Charlotte Auto Glass is the name of this website, and it belongs to Impex Auto Glass, with its shop at 5641 David Cox Rd in north Charlotte. It is not connected with any other Charlotte business that uses a similar name.

Where is the Impex Auto Glass shop in Charlotte?

At 5641 David Cox Rd, Charlotte, NC 28269, in north Charlotte. Call before you come so the right glass is there for your car. The auto glass shop in Charlotte page has directions and what to bring.

Can you come to me instead?

Yes. Impex offers mobile service, so the work can be done at your home, your office garage or wherever the car is parked, weather and space allowing.

Can a chip be repaired, or do I need a new windshield?

It depends on size, depth and position. Small, shallow damage away from the edges can often be filled. Large, deep or edge damage usually means replacement. The technician decides at the car.

Will my insurance go up if I claim a cracked windshield?

A glass claim under comprehensive coverage is not an at-fault accident, so it does not add SDIP points in North Carolina. Insurers may still look at how often you file claims when they renew a policy.

Is a cracked windshield replaced for free in North Carolina?

Not by law. North Carolina has no zero-deductible glass law, so your comprehensive deductible normally applies. Some policies include full glass coverage, so read yours or ask your agent.

How long does a new windshield take?

Impex puts it at about one hour plus a short curing period, and most drivers are back on the road within two hours. Calibration, when the car needs it, adds between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

Do I have to use the shop my insurer suggests?

No. North Carolina law, G.S. 58-3-180, lets the claimant choose who repairs the vehicle, and the insurer pays the same amount either way.
